What is Jin Shin Jyutsu?
(pronounced jin shin jutesue)
Good news – no needles! Instead, Jin Shin Jyutsu uses finger placement on sequences of vital energy centers (26 pairs) many which follow specific channels, known as meridians (as in acupuncture). Activated through light touch, these energy centers improve blood flow, release tension, and enhance or unblock life-energy, “chi” or “ki”, promoting relaxation and the restoration of proper function. Although it can be administered to you by a practitioner, the beauty of this ancient art is that your practitioner can help you customize a daily self-care plan that is specific to your individual health needs.
Jin Shin Jyutsu can be used to promote deep states of relaxation, thereby allowing healing and recovery from illness and injury to occur more quickly.
What are its origins?
Jin Shin Jyutsu is based on knowledge that dates back to a sacred Japanese text, the Kojiki (AD 712). In the early 1900’s, Jiro Murai, at the time a university student, practiced these revitalizing health routines on himself, hence fully recovering from a life-threatening illness and devoting the remaining fifty years of his life to study this time honored art. As one his students in Japan, Mary Burmeister brought Jin Shin Jyutsu to America in the 1950s. Through her practice, writings and teachings, she has shared this art with thousands of people. Now, there are many instructors that teach worldwide.
How does it work?
Jin Shin Jyutsu works with the life energy that flows, like a river, through our body along pathways similar to acupuncture meridians. Along these pathways are specific vital energy centers, similar to circuit breakers, that lock when the movement of energy along a pathway is hindered, protecting us from further deterioration. When these energy centers are impeded, symptoms may appear in a corresponding area of the body. By applying the hands to a designated sequence of energy centers (referred to as a ‘flow’), symptoms can dissipate and vitality emerge. With the primary focus on diminishing physiological symptoms, the root cause of illness and injury is addressed at its deepest level.
What does it help?
Jin Shin Jyutsu treatments promote wellness by inducing relaxation, reducing the effects of stress, restoring emotional equilibrium, reducing pain and addressing the root cause of acute and chronic conditions. As a valuable adjunct to conventional therapies, Jin Shin Jyutsu’s gentle and non-invasive treatments allow the recipient to experience a profound sense of relaxation. Appropriate for all ages and states of health, this simple health practice improves countless health conditions, including digestion, memory, learning differences, circulation, muscle tone, stress, sleep issues, neck & back pain, headaches, chronic fatigue, immune system, hormone balance, and respiration.
What to expect in a session
Lasting about an hour, the client lies on a comfortable padded table while the practitioner works non-invasively, over clothing. Similar to a detective, the practitioner collects clues for individualizing a treatment plan, including listening to the wrist pulses, ascertaining current health concerns and history, and observing the body conformation. The practitioner’s hands are placed on a series of vital energy centers (referred to as Safety Energy Locks), two at a time, in an established sequence. The hands on the two Safety Energy Locks act as jumper cables reawakening the innate vitality and assisting the client’s energy system to harmonize itself. Those who receive a Jin Shin Jyutsu session report feeling profoundly relaxed, with the effects of a session continuing for at least several hours, often with significant shifts in symptoms and underlying conditions occurring over time.
What is Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Care?
The effects of treatments can continue and deepen, especially with the adjunct of an individually designed Jin Shin Jyutsu self-care routine that clients are given to do between sessions. At its heart, the work embodies a life of simplicity, calmness, patience, and health.
