Explain to me again why I’m supposed to take supplements?

A healthy lifestyle, along with a diet primarily of whole and organic foods, is the foundational cornerstone of optimal health. The reality is that most of us with our busy lives find it difficult to eat and live in a consistently healthy way, resulting in inadequate intake of the required essential nutrients for full health. A number of factors contribute to this deficiency, including declining soil quality, toxic exposures, poor sleep, chronic stress, less time spent outdoors, overuse of antibiotics, and a decline in our consumption of a diversity of plant food.

While dietary supplements are not a substitute for the importance of eating a variety of healthy foods, scientific evidence shows they are beneficial for overall health and for managing certain health conditions, and they provide the necessary vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants for maintaining optimal body functions.

More than half of all Americans take one or more dietary supplements, most commonly to fill gaps from our diet, improve overall health, boost energy and immunity, help prevent cell damage, and increase bone density and reduce fractures. Taking supplements can benefit a number of bodily functions as well as counter the effects of certain medications, quell symptoms from allergies and food intolerances, supplement a vegan or vegetarian diet, and help prepare for and recover from surgery. They can target age-specific populations, as with vitamin B12, especially recommended for people over age 50.

While supplements, no matter how high-quality or properly manufactured, cannot take the place of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, they support a number of valuable functions in the body.
